Bass Supplement
The fly looked like a small bird. The rod was 9 feet of coiled kinetic energy waiting to be released. The water was dead still and 70 degrees. The fly landed within the shadows, along the brush covered bank. I waited. The fly sat on the surface with rings emanating from it. I waited some more. When all of the rings had dissipated, I tightened up on the line and wiggled the tip of the rod. The fly moved an inch or so. The water underneath the fly opened up, and the fly was gone…
Fishing for bass. For a large portion of my life, I didn't use the "B" word. I was, to quote a friend, "One of those effete trout fishing snobs." The first time that I caught a bass with a fly rod, it was completely by accident. I was fishing from a float tube for 10 to 12 inch trout when a 14 inch small mouth inhaled my size 8 wooly bugger. A 2 lb. fish on a 4 weight is a lot of fun. A 2 lb. small mouth on a 4 weight is more than a handful. I never told anyone about that fish- until now.
The more I've fished, the more exposure I have had to bass. The more exposure that I have had, the more respect that I hold for the fish. I can honestly say that I hold warm-water species in as high a regard as I do for the trout that I grew up with.
